Interview with Rachel Van Slembrouck

This is Rachel’s perspective on community involvement, work-life presence, and what it takes to be successful.
Q: Tell me about your career and your role at Yeo & Yeo CPAs & Advisors.
I’m a Senior Manager based in the firm’s Saginaw office. I lead the Client Accounting Software Team and am a member of the Healthcare Services Group. My areas of specialization include outsourced accounting, business advisory services, and tax planning and preparation. I am passionate about being involved in the community. I serve as chair and board member of the Saginaw County Animal Care & Control Advisory Council. I am also treasurer of the Saginaw Valley State University College of Business and Management’s Young Alumni board, and I am a volleyball coach at Bethlehem Lutheran School.
Q: What do you enjoy most about your career?
I enjoy the ever-changing nature of each day. No two projects or clients are identical, and this dynamic work environment continually challenges me and allows me to expand my knowledge. The opportunity to help clients, build trust, create lasting relationships, and share my knowledge with colleagues makes my career even more fulfilling.
Q: What have you learned from volunteering and giving back?
I have always been very passionate about my community, and working at Yeo & Yeo, where community service is a core value, has allowed me to pursue that passion. As a volunteer, I have met some of the most hardworking and accomplished individuals who give all of themselves daily and never ask for anything in return. Through my service on nonprofit boards, I have learned that being committed and dedicating time and resources really does make a difference.
Q: How do you balance your career, personal life, and passions?
Achieving the perfect balance between career, personal life, and passions is almost impossible. Setting expectations is a great way to start. During tax season, my family and loved ones understand the demands on my time. I sacrifice some things during that time of year, but I know it is temporary. When I’m not in busy season, I prioritize quality time with my family, making sure to take vacations and dedicate time to myself and my passions.
Q: What advice would you give to the next generation of female leaders?
Don’t be afraid to say you don’t know something, but be committed to finding out the answer. Focus on continual learning and becoming better at your job, and it will take you far. Be confident, overcommunicate, and advocate for yourself! And remember, you are allowed to be proud of how hard you work and how far you have come.
Q: What’s the biggest factor that has helped you be successful?
I have high standards for myself, and I work very hard to help my clients and my colleagues succeed. But I also know that I can only go so far on my own. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my husband, family, colleagues, friends, and community connections, who are there to support me and offer guidance. Surrounding myself with a strong support system is invaluable. Life is significantly influenced by the company you keep, and I am fortunate to be surrounded by an exceptional support network.
